Alumni
If you have played, coached, or been a part of this game in any of the preceding years and are not hearing from us on a regular basis, please contact us to make sure we have a correct address for you.
The alumni Association was formed on Friday, August 8, 1980, the eve of the 27th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl Game. The Alumni Association was formed to:
1. Serve as Area Chairman for advertising and ticket sales in communities where there are no active Shriners or assist Shriners who work in these areas.
2. Participate on Game Day as ticket takers, ticket sellers, ushers or on stadium security.
3. Help with promotion of game through distribution of posters and through contact with the media.
4. Help with the Shrine Bowl Golf Tournament held on the day before the football game.
It was also voted that dues should be collected in order to help defray expenses such as mailing. The amount of dues was set at $2.00 per year. This was later changed and is still $3.00 per year.
As a former participant with an understanding of what the game means, if you would like to help in any of these areas or has other thoughts, we urge you to contact us.
Remember that every year we are requesting the 25th and 50th game participants to join us for the parade at 12 Noon and to be introduced at half-time of the game. August of 2006 will be the years of 1956 and 1981. Make plans now to join the players of 2006 in putting a smile on a child.
Letter from Rick Williams, Alumni President February 2007
Dear Shrine Game Alumnus:
I hope each of you had an enjoyable fall, a good holiday season and are enjoying 2007. I wanted to let you know that last summer’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl game was another success. The game, which was played at Plymouth State College, again generated a very meaningful contribution to the Shriners hospital organization.
Our alumni association was a big part of this effort. We received more than $25,000 in donations and proceeds from former alumni. On behalf of the Shrine Game’s board of directors, I would like to thank each of you that made a donation. You have assisted with a very worthy cause and your support helps keep the tradition of the game alive.
As I have said before, as the alumni base grows, we have become a more significant factor in the game. Our donations are an important source of revenue for Shriners hospitals and our activities continue to have influence on the game itself. Going forward, our efforts will help maintain the game and its cause.
I would like to ask each of you for your assistance. There are few ways you can help. First, consider making a donation of $30 or more. Remember, these dollars go directly to the Shriners hospitals which provide free care to children with burn injuries and orthopedic problems. Next, we need help with advertisements in our game program. If relevant for you, consider placing an ad. If not, consider reaching out to friend or colleague at a business which could benefit from an ad. Enclosed in this letter are advertisement forms. Lastly, feel free to contact me if you would like to help in other way with the game. I can be reached via email at rjw@wvcapital.com or by telephone at 617-261-2052.
The 2007 Shrine Bowl, which marks the 54th edition of the game, will be played on Saturday, August 4. This year’s game will return to Dartmouth College and will be played there on the brand new field at Memorial Stadium.
We will be holding a golf tournament for the game this year as well. You and your guests are invited to play in it. The tournament will be held at Crown Point Country Club in Springfield, VT on Monday, July 30, which is the Monday before the game, starting at 8:30 a.m. Enclosed with this letter is additional information regarding the golf tournament.
As we move closer to the game, I will send out additional correspondence with more details for the game and for the alumni association. In the meantime, I look forward to hearing from you and thanks again for your support.
Sincerely,
Rick Williams,
Alumni President
