Windsor, VT – It’s eight months before strong legs run so that weak legs may someday walk, but already plans for the 58th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar are well underway with the announcement of the Head Coaches for the two Shrine Teams. Chris Childs from Lebanon High School will serve as Head Coach for New Hampshire while Jim Provost from Champlain Valley Union will lead the Vermont Shrine eleven.
The summer classic, which brings together the finest high school football players in New Hampshire and Vermont, is a game though where the real winners are the children in the Shrine Hospitals. This year’s game will be played Saturday, August 6 at Windsor High School in Windsor, Vermont
In announcing the Head Coaches, Wayne Shepard, the game’s General Chairman said "We welcome both Coach Childs and Provost to our elite team. The Board of Governors appreciates the selfless time and commitment that this position requires as they prepare their teams for another challenging game."
Coach Childs’ Lebanon Raiders were 11-0 and NH Division IV State Champions this past fall. Childs played in the 1995 Game following a stellar career at Lebanon in which he was a two-time all state selection in football. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Windsor High School in 1999 and then served as an assistant at Stevens High in Claremont. He was named Head Coach at Lebanon in 2006.
On the Vermont side, Coach Provost is no stranger to the Shrine Bowl either, having served as Head Coach for Vermont in 1990. He is a graduate of Rice Memorial High School in Burlington and UVM. He was Head Coach at Rice Memorial for 14 years before taking over the coaching reigns at Champlain Valley four years ago. His Redhawks were runner-ups for the Division II state title in 2009 and reached the semi-finals this year. He was named Vermont State Coach of the Year in 2009.
Over 200 players from Vermont and New Hampshire, all graduating high school seniors, have been nominated by their respective head coaches, and screening committees, chaired by the two head coaches, will select the two 36-man teams. The two teams will be announced in late January.
The two Shrine teams will again practice at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH for eight days leading up to the annual summer classic on August 6.
The Shrine Game has raised over 4.5 million for the Shrine Hospitals in 57 years. The hospitals which benefit from the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, are the Shrine Children’s Hospitals in Springfield, Mass. and Montreal, Que. and the Shrine Burns Institute in Boston.
The game is sponsored by Bektash Shrine Center of Concord, Cairo Shrine Center of Rutland and Mt. Sinai Center of Montpelier.
